But
should Ghana set free Ataa Ayi who is purportedly living a pious
lifestyle in prison even though he is serving his 120 years for various
armed robbery offences – will the USA house him if the Mahama-led
government puts forward a request?
This has
been a mind-blowing question posed to the USA government after
negotiating with the government
of Ghana to accept a two-year stay of Guantanamo ex-detainees who have been described by the foreign media as threat to the US.
of Ghana to accept a two-year stay of Guantanamo ex-detainees who have been described by the foreign media as threat to the US.
President Mahama in defence
of the ex-detainees stay after a public outcry asked Ghanaians to show
‘compassion’ for these men who have spent 14 years in Gitmo – “In the
Bible, it teaches us to be compassionate.”
Nonetheless,
a leading member of the Progressive People’s Party [PPP],Charles Owusu
has charged government to also release Ataa Ayi on ‘compassionate’
grounds and in reciprocal seek for just a year stay for him in the
Unites State [US].
“Just after his release,
President Mahama should negotiate with President Obama and send Ataa Ayi
to them. The Americans are more Christian than us [Ghanaians] so I
believe they will gladly accept our own terrorist Ataa Ayi,” he said in
an interview with Peacefmonline.com.
